Alternative Excercise

This is an old entry I forgot to post up a couple of week ago...

I've been trying to think of some fun, alternative ways to exercise because honestly no matter how many times I tell myself I am going to go running, I probably wont. I used to love running, it was a great way to stay in shape and clear my head, but lately it has become a pain for me (figuratively and literally). I'd say a majority of it is due to my laziness (heh!) but also because after 15+ years of playing sports, my knees are starting to feel the aches and pains of previous injuries and the constant wear and tear. Every once in a while I try to lift weights with my brother, but I'm not the biggest fan because it doesn't give me the opportunity to get outside and be active (I just stand in front of my tv!). So here are some of my current ideas for alternative exercise:

1. Hiking
What better way to get outdoors and exercise than doing something I personally love?! Hiking is a great alternative to both running and weight lifting. The trek is a bit nicer on the legs and knees than running, yet you still work the same leg muscles and get a good cardio workout. There are also opportunities to work on the arms as more advanced hikes require rope work or slight climbing. Plus, the amazing views and being immersed in nature is a fulfilling reward at the end.

2. Swimming
Living in Hawaii is a great opportunity to get outdoors and jump in the water. I'm not the best swimmer, but it's been my goal to start swimming this summer. I've heard swimming is a great way to stay in shape and doesn't wear on the body quite as much.

3. Biking
I didn't realize how many great bike trails there were in Hawaii till very recently. I think biking is a fun way to spend time outdoors with friends and family and get a good workout at the same time. I don't think I'd enjoy biking up hills very much, but there are other trails for a casual outing.
